MAINTAIN YOUR FOCUS
Scripture Reading: 1 Kings 20:31-43
NOW AS THE KING PASSED BY, HE CRIED OUT TO THE KING AND SAID, “YOUR SERVANT WENT OUT INTO THE MIDST OF THE BATTLE; AND THERE, A MAN CAME OVER AND BROUGHT A MAN TO ME, AND SAID, “GUARD THIS MAN; IF BY ANY MEANS HE IS MISSING, YOUR LIFE SHALL BE FOR HIS LIFE, OR ELSE YOU SHALL PAY A TALENT OF SILVER. ” – 1 KINGS 20:39
The illustration given by the prophet to King Ahab highlights the all- important subject of priorities.
Our priorities are what we consider to be most important at any time. By their very nature, our priorities change with different situations. Our topmost priority at any time must be the principal object of our focus.
This soldier had accepted a charge from another man to guard a prisoner. Failure to do so would attract a penalty of death or significant financial loss.
We are not told the incentive or what compelled him to accept the assignment but once he did, he was committed. It was therefore inexcusable that he chose to be busy “here and there’ leading to the escape of the prisoner.
Something urgent may possibly have caused the servant to temporarily lose focus. Life has however shown over the years that the urgent is rarely important, and the most important issues are often not urgent.
A lot of things take up our mental energy and waste our time but hardly move us toward our goals. The servant could not pay attention even when his very life was at stake.
His failure to focus on the important assignment given him ended up being costly. Commit yourself to revisit and refocus on your God-given purpose and your most important priorities today.
LORD, GRANT ME THE WISDOM AND STRENGTH TO CUT OUT ACTIVITIES THAT TAKE UP ALL MY TIME AND KEEP ME BUSY BUT UNPRODUCTIVE.
